Winchester Gardens - Health Center
Maplewood, NJ
Winchester Gardens was founded and endowed in the 1920’s. This ‘retirement home’ was originally designed by John Russell Pope, a prominent architect of the early 1900’s and by the Olmsted Brothers, who were landscape architects. In the 1990’s, Winchester Garden engaged KDA Architects to design a major expansion to upgrade the facility to a modern life plan community.
In 2014, Winchester Gardens commissioned KDA Architects to create a master plan for the repositioning of the campus for the next generation of seniors. In addition to renovations and additions to improve the community amenities, a complete renovation and expansion of the health center was completed using the neighborhood model of care.
Multiple additions were required to create a final product of primarily private rooms. The new plan creates landscaped garden courtyards with multiple porches and spaces for social interaction. The architectural and interior design reflect the design of the original historic buildings.
